In 1989 Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet realized a film project that was commissioned by Virginie Herbin, director of the audiovisual department of the Musée d'Orsay: Cézanne. Herbin could certainly not imagine the extent to which the "Straubs" would appreciate the body of work of Cézanne, positively. She made a winning bet. The "Straubs" return to Cézanne in 2004 when they realized the magnificient "Une visite au Louvre". Both films depart from the famous work of Joachim Gasquet and his dialogs with Cézanne: Ce qui m’a dit…(1921). What is a frame or 'cadre'? And how does one construct a framing or 'cadrage'? What is a motif? And who is a painter? Who is a cineaste?
